Why is my closer slamming?

Slamming Last Few Inches?

Installed as directed, the closer is in maximum latching power position (pin in front hole), which insures your door latches closed.

If you are unhappy with the Snap Action Closing Feature first follow the adjustment below.

For models with Single Hole Jamb Bracket and two hole end plug

If less closing power is required, hold door open about 8" with hold-open washer, pull long connecting pin and relocate in rear hole.

For models with Two Hole Jamb Bracket

For a smoother and quieter latching, hold door open about 8" and slide hold-open washer to tube. Remove the short connecting pin from the jamb bracket and relocate closer rod in rear hole as shown in Figure B. Push door open further and slide hold-open washer back toward jamb bracket. 

If you are still unhappy with the latching feature re-position your door bracket one or two notches or reinstall 1/4" further away from your door closer. By lengthening the installed closure the door will close before the latching feature is reached.

Before moving door bracket, open door and move hold open washer to lock closer in the open position. Remove connecting pin from door bracket. Adjust position on the door bracket. Now swing the closer back over to the door bracket and position the door to re-connect end of the closer with connecting pin. This is an easier way to remover and re-attach rather than pulling on the tube while trying to connect to the door bracket. Open the door a bit further and slide the hold open washer back to the jamb bracket. The closer should now be back to normal use and the door closes before the latching feature kicks in.

Slamming from fully open?

The adjustment screw is designed to slow the closing of your door until the last few inches, latching power feature. Turn adjustment screw clockwise to slow down close or counterclockwise to speed up close.

If you have turned the adjustment screw clockwise as tight as it will allow and your door is still slamming closed from fully open position, the closer needs replacement.
